Befoe the March 2011 AGM, Sarah Newton MP gave a talk and answered questions. Talking to Falmouth Civic Society at their AGM, Sarah Newton MP said that the Localism Bill, now in its Committee Stage will have a great effect on local organisations but the revolution would be a peaceful one. Local people could veto plans, but it was all about getting the right balance between the people of Falmouth and Penryn and Cornwall County Council. The ideal of the Big Society is that everyone works together for the common good and it is very important in a time of cuts to make the best use of our resources. However, she warned, that with power comes responsibility but she has confidence that local people know what is needed for the local community. In response to many questions from the audience, Mrs Newton agreed that a sustainable environment is not possible with fragmented interests; a strategic policy for energy is outside the localism bill yet it is important for local people to see direct benefit from local sources of energy. Questions were also raised about the failure to listen to people’s wishes in the case of Falmouth Post Office. Mrs Newton also answered questions about the future of the Falmouth Coastguard 24 hour service. The consultation period for this has been increased and a delegation is going to Westminster on 24 th March.
