A&P unveil plans to develop a marina at Falmouth Docks

A &P Appledore have submitted an application to Carrick District Council for planning permission to develop part of the dock area as a marina.

The proposal involves establishing 290 pontoon berths to be provided on 10,12 and 15 metre finger pontoons located in the northern section of the inner harbour area between the Queen's Jetty, Western and Duchy Wharves. A new floating breakwater will also be provided to protect the marina from prevailing winds. The breakwater would provide additional berthing for commercial vessels and super yachts.

The existing Empire and Kings jetties are currently being demolished in the area where the new pontoons are proposed. The remaining wharves in this area, Duchy, Queens and County, will continue to be used for the berthing of commercial vessels.

Welfare facilities for the proposed marina will be provided in a temporary modular building on one of the floating pontoons. A marina office is proposed within an existing portakabin located adjacent to the proposed car park. It is anticipated that permanent facilities will be provided onshore as part of a cruise liner terminal development.

A car parking area providing 255 spaces is intended to serve the new marina development with an overflow car park for 49 vehicles for use in peak periods. In addition a safe route for both pedestrians and vehicles through the operational dock to the marina and car park has been identified to allow safe public access through the site .

This should be a welcome and exciting development prospect for Falmouth bringing much needed additional berthing for local sailors and visitors as well as increasing inward investment, retaining and enhancing the economic and marine function of the docks as well as visually improving the area for both residents and visitors.
