Who We AreThe Falmouth Civic Society was formed in the early 1970s to resist development proposals which in the opinion of many residents would have had a detrimental effect upon the town. Principal among these proposals was a scheme to build a large block of flats in the High Street which would have been totally out of scale with the area surrounding the site. Opposition generated by the Society brought about the abandonment of the scheme and was one of the first successes of the Society.
Since that time the Society has played its part in bringing influence to bear on the planning process to secure the preservation of the maritime and architectural history of the town whilst at the same time supporting renewal where appropriate by sympathetic and complementary development. Aims of the SocietyTo promote and encourage the following:- (i) high standards of architecture and town planning in Falmouth and its surroundings; (ii) public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings; (iii) the preservation, development, improvement and beautification of features of general public amenity or historic interest, with particular reference to the maritime heritage and waterfront; (iv) the provision of representatives to participate at meetings of such bodies as the Falmouth Conservation Areas Advisory Committee and the Town Forum; The Society has no political or religious activities and is non profit making.
